## Overview

Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the traditional custodians of the Australian continent and its surrounding islands. Their cultures are the world's oldest living continuous cultures, with evidence of human presence dating back at least **65,000 years**.

### Mabo Decision (1992)
The High Court's *Mabo v Queensland (No 2)* decision recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples had pre-existing rights to land — overturning the doctrine of *terra nullius* (land belonging to no one).

A referendum was held on **14 October 2023** to establish a constitutionally enshrined Indigenous Voice to Parliament. The *No* vote won with **60.06%**.
